The minute I read your words about this music, I could picture exactly where I was, how old, etc. I always enjoyed the harmonies in this particular song, and acoustic styling and tempo too.

Thanks Art, really enjoyable to watch and hear, brings back good memories!
Like Heart was saying, music can play a pivotal role in holding, creating and maintaining memories.
(Oh, and as aside, caught the last 40 minutes of Seredipity last night!)

Hi Everybody
Any views on the idea that "Music may be even more ancient than the human race"?
Scientists have been raising fundamental questions about the origin and purpose of music and apparently, it is not unique to humans at all.
"HUMPBACK WHALES use many of the same rhythms and patterns as human composers in their songs, tempting some scientists to speculate that a universal music awaits discovery."

Music and our memories ~
So, the progression of this thread got me to thinking of songs that I remember from childhood, from youth, from certain points in my life. I know everyone has songs, snippets of melody, that waft up from the deep caves of our past.
Let's go spelunking, shall we?
I can remember this song: I even had a pair of skates like the ones this girl is wearing.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p02DgHeGdyI
I still have a pair of nice indoor white leather skates, and I still use them on occasion, and not for decoration!
heart mentioned Puff the Magic Dragon...♫♫
honestly?
I was so bored with that song when I was a child (terrible I know...that's like, blasphemy...to acknowledge such about a PeterPaulandMary classic!) GASP
...the thing is...you can't get away from it.
It's still a part of my childhood...and darn if I don't know all the words.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wik2uc69WbU
An earworm I tell you. Frolic-ing away...inside my head.
Makes me think of Kukla, Fran and Ollie (now that's a r e a l stretch...no age related comments gentlefolk...)
Then there was that song by the Archies...hmmm. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ANtMdzOFIVQ
My neighbor and I coreographed (and I use that term very lightly) a dance for it, in her garage, one summer. Grapevine, step-ball-chain...who knows what we did. It was summer, and it was fun, Shugah.
So, fast forward, to the music of the late 70's, early 80's...US...
There's a thread somewhere in the bowels of the forum where I posted lyrics from the Journey song "Don't Stop Believin'", and Delboca piped up and said he'd always wondered what they were saying...
Here it is, set to video clips from X-Men. heh...not bad.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OGzwNdTVHJo
Now, it's the theme song for Glee, a new television series. Interesting.

Well, I do not agree with Linquist Steven Pinker, that music is simply "auditory cheesecake".
Our emotional response to music support evidence to the contrary. There have been many, many times in my life where hearing a few measures of music has instantly triggered tears; whether of overwhelming sadness or indescribable joy.
The visible changes and activity shown in brain scans of Sting as he is listening would certainly indicate a deeper (no pun intended) relationship between melody and our physiological design.
Music is mathematical, and all things of the universe can be described mathematically, therefore, musically. http://www.davesabine.com/Music/Article ... fault.aspx

I am with you here, Artmouse, if the Neanderthals 50'000 years ago have had bone flutes to play, then music precedes language in any possible sense, even the linguist Whoever would agree here.
I am going to ask Dr. Paul to share his views, possibly on the teleseminar, as to what evolutionary purporses music might have served.

I am with you here, Artmouse
too adorable!
this is how nick names come about...
just by chance...
Artmouse would be Artmuse;s little art gallery invisible pet...who she and only she can see!
a sort of Disney cartoon coach....
if any of us get stumped with how to resolve a real relationship crisis...i suggest we call on our new mascot,
Artmouse, to see what he/she has to say?
trudolph...you have made me smile with glee this morning!
lets see if the the other members here reel me back in to
more serious chatter or....if we get a new tiny super hero to join us forever more
much joy,
~heart~

EXCUSE ME WHILE I KISS THE SKY!
ok art mouse...i watched those youtubes....the archies...yikes..
i especially loved how facial expression was somewhat different
back then...so fun...!
that dress that Mary Travers is wearing...there were only about 8 Simplicity patterns back then and my mom had that one!! people did a lot of sewing and concocting of various brocade sheath dresses...all of which were poorly fitting in the bust line! if one followed the pattern and did the darts exactly as they were on the pattern, it usually produced a strange sort of 'puff' thing at the end.
my home economics teacher called my mother in and told her i was a hussy...or some such word because i had hemmed my skit up above the customary line....it was a serious thing....!
but my mom told her that she approved of my hemline!!!!yay!! one less episode of shame for this kid...
loved the melanie skate song!! ha!
on a completely different note:
Motown....what a revolutionary time for us little ones!! Really...you had to be there! White guys wearing shark skin jackets and standing in lines of 4 trying to do all the cool moves of the Temptations and all of us girls doing the dianna ross thing...Stop in the Name of Love...
Yep...we had not grown up going to kindergarten and stuff with black kids, so when Motown music came in and integration became the norm, the black kids were cool because they could sing and move like our musical heros!! they taught us how to dance in the hallways...
i love all that music still because it allowed for movement while singing.....
memory lane...
by high school things were getting more psychedelic and every dance we went to at these black light /strobe light clubs had 2 songs that ANY garage band group HAD to learn how to play...
if i ever have dimentia...if they play these in the nursing home...i will come back to life!!!
