December is PSYCHOLOGY OF MUSIC MONTH!

Postby ArtMuse » Tue Nov 17, 2009 2:43 pm

Now we're talkin'.
I LOVE this idea.

http://psychology.suite101.com/article. ... y_of_music
Interesting article to start...I'm certain there was/is a thread that went in depth into the affects of music and learning and different areas of the brain, etc.

Bob Marley [Magician?] "Get Up, Stand Up" ~ It's amazing what one individual's passion, propelled by music, can do to change societal views. http://www.bobmarley.com/
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tg97JiBn1kE

Ennio Morricone.[King]
The more you learn about this man and his music, the more you realize you've been hearing his compositions throughout life, in movies particularly.
http://www.enniomorricone.com/
From spaghetti westerns and "Bluebeard" (Ha!!), to The Mission, Cinema Paradiso and What Dreams May Come; he gives us a wealth of emotional depth in his musical stylings, from anger to well-being.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1FzVWlOKeLs

Godsmack [Warriors]
Complete shift, but interesting just the same. Hard-driving, edgy, raspy...their single "Alive" was used for Navy commercial clips. Lots of testosterone, aggression, tension and action in this music. http://www.godsmack.com/music/discography/cd/
In Resident Evil gaming... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X2BGyW6WvQo

Cake [Kings?]~ "Short Skirt, Long Jacket"....they want a girl who uses a machete to cut through red tape...hehe..
Fun, quirky lyrics and tempo. {...she's fast, she's thorough, and sharp...as a tack...}.
What kind of girl has "eyes that burn like ssss-cigarettes..."? ;)
Does this have theraputic value...? lol Fun.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vd34vJohGXc

Then again, who isn't moved by this...?
"The Last Words You Said"
Vocals:[Magician/Lover] Sarah Brightman and Richard Marx (who also did the arrangement...)...with images of Ekaterina Gordeeva and Sergei Grinkov skating. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BoQpUpN7KjI
*sigh..

Bob Marley...

In general, I would agree with you about Bob Marley; his impact was intense and enormous.

However, his "No Woman, No Cry" definitely needs to be taken as seriously as his other work.

Wooooo! I've taken all your suggestions and downloaded the songs! I will analyze them and try to have them relate to aspects of the psyche...

MUSIC AND BOUNDARIES

ladies...
i have to confess that this assignment is unraveling all of the healthy boundary building i had done until now...

now...i am faced with my worst, worst addictive and immature qualities....
i have spent hours and hours on amazon previewing mp3's of songs i liked years ago...and have managed to find a gag point before downloading 30 of them, thank God!...
also, in the mix is youtube where i have zoned out in supposed study of more favorites...

on top of everything else...like getting out guitars and keyboards...i have stood infront of the bathroom mirror (this is a bit TMI, but, confession is good...yes?...anyway...have stood in front of bathroom mirror singing Heatwave, Unconditional Love and others using hairbrush for mic...a behavior i thought i had abandoned 10 years ago.

i am a troubled woman  and had serious...no joke, serious thoughts of writing that pretty little kitty kat faced, taylor swift a letter...i was going to ask if she would consider doing a song i wrote and never copyrighted from when i was 23. i would donate my share of the profits if she would donate her half and we would help kids with cancer...
and trust me...i would love it if that dream came true just because i think she is in the power seat now to do some good.

so..pandora's box of unfulfilled dreams and unrestricted time issues has happened here ...

somehow...i feel there is some good in all this...and that i can see all the stuff i did to put the things i love on the back burner as a mom...

sadly, somewhere after my recent accident, including on the way in the ambulance, i began what is commonly known as "barginning with God ....begging for a little more time on planet earth to do unfinished business....

i asked for some of the big ones like getting to live to see my grandchildren someday and getting to finish more things related to my personal spiritual mission...but, i also threw in a promise to dedicate myself to an important cause...and, i was thinking to stay open and be guided...but to feel like this was truly my second life, born from a wish granted, and so, a life of more service to a higher purpose...

but then...there was this last nagging thing...i didn't want to die without finishing the music project...20 or so songs...i had this idea to turn into a musical...a very good idea...but, i flunked music theory and piano 101...could do stuff by ear, but not on staff paper...too much right brain dominance by birth and too many head injuries? or, just plain distracted...boundary issue...?

anyway...the assignment from dr paul has challenged all the good, the bad and the ugly associated with music...its had an effect like EMDR, where one pathway leads to another and a small child is sitting in the middle of a big space.

while you guys are finding your favorite tunes...i've hit a midlife crisis!!! ...or at least a good chunk of """"female drama"""'

but, alas and alak...i am hoping that i am not alone here...
has anyone else been burning the midnight oil listening to music?

and if so...what is it about music that does this?

heart, dearest, I laughed out loud, so hard, when I read this.
It's nice to know that we are not alone, in our oddities and antics when we are "alone in our room"...lol
Fear not, oh heartofagopi, you are not alone. ;)

heartofagopi wrote:...so...what is it about music...?

Music. Those melodies, those lyrics, those percussive resonations...they stir our very souls. They lead us to believe, they thrill us to the core, send us into uncontrollable tears, and send us off into reverie.
Music documents our very human, very emotional lives.

Music captures our attention, zeros in our focus (when we like it...), and sends neurons scurrying to their all important destinations. Electrical and stimulating, for relaxation or assertive action: music is the rainbow in our brain.

Dearheart,
Absolutely ~ allow yourself to be impelled, propelled, and inspired, to send your thoughts of music on to the youngster Taylor Swift: what's the worst that can happen? She declines? ...someone else may see it, the right someone else, and voila...music of (the) heart. ;)

Take directive (puns intended!) from Mr. Good, Bad and Ugly himself, Clint, and ask yourself,
Do you feel Lucky? ...? Well...? ...DO ya...?

Music PSYCHOLOGY & suffering/hurt & loss

Postby ArtMuse » Sun Nov 22, 2009 11:25 pm

Late night for me, so, turning in, in a moment.
Glad you liked the Cake, heart. ;) They did mention the girl wants a cupholder/armrest in her car...
I'm not so sure about the Emmylou/Nicolette duet...we'd have to give it our own sound...less sugary perhaps...?

Here's my quick add:
I absolutely LOVE Richard Marx, and all the work he's done for and with music and the arts. His father wrote jingles, including the old Raisin Bran commercial jingle....(father is also a Richard ~ at concerts, father [before passing] and son would address each other as...please don't censor...Big d*** and Little d***...lol).
http://www.john-gates.com/popups/d***-marx1.html

Anyway ~
Newest album released by son Richard, "Emotional Remains"
Wonderful stuff, but, to get to my point and to hear the lamentation of a suffering Lover man, dial this up. "Through My Veins"
http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fusea ... d=22772963
(...it's a terrible video; but you can get the feel ~ see lyrics below)

I saw you sitting by the window
Of a cafe I passed by
And though clearly my reflection
It was your face I recognised

And after all these years I'm still right here
Where you left me

And I've been calling out
Believing you would answer
But I'll try to let go now
Cause it's you running through
My veins

You'd come by when I was dreaming
But lately you've been gone
Maybe I've been trying too hard
And maybe you have just moved on

I guess there's not a lot that you forgot
To tell me

And I've missed you hanging round
And the way we were together
But I can't let go now
Cause it's you running through
My veins

Oh
It's you running through my veins
Oh
And it's you running through my veins
Oh
It's you running through my veins
ad infinitum...

Leonard Cohen ~ "Hallelujah" (Dr. Paul? heard this one?) Guilt? Shame? Forgiveness?

Rufus WainWright ~ Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk (let's talk about our boundary holes, shall we?)
villa...? This fellow may fit your original interpretation of Magician... :)

Interesting that John Mayer was featured in today's newsletter....my FAVORITE! :)

Love his poetry and music. I can understand it! However, his lyrics are not simplistic, they are challenging and insightful. For a young man, he has an incredibly clear view of life.

Sigghhh, he is my Lover man, unattainable, the story of my life.

i can see why you like his powerful words, jd..
the lyrics that dr p posted in the newsletter
had IMPACT...
i am a huge fan of music as an eternal medium for
motivation toward ...hopefully...a right cause.

i have always been moved by anti war songs
and even if peter, paul and mary had gotten
a bit out of style...or thought of as kind of ''corny''...
i still was moved to tears
about 10 years ago or so when i went with the
kids to washington d.c. and, by chance, there
on the capitol steps was peter yarrow, guitar in hand,
singing old 'we shall overcome' type songs, with a bunch
of senators, edward kennedy et al...

they were trying to draw media attention
about the sad state of underfunding for the
national endowment of the arts.

everyone sat down anywhere on the ground
and did the hootenanny thing....and, strange
as it may sound...it was very moving, very unifying
and even though everyone was singing
'puff the magic dragon'' and not lyrics about
saving the arts in our country...
there were many tears...because people felt
that even this simple song represented the arts
and the child in us...or in a school who would or would not get
nourished as a result of so many tax dollars going
towards bombs instead of a little glockenspiel
in the kindergarten classroom.

my point is that music is so powerful
that powerful lyrics can have impact
and extremely simple lyrics can have impact as well...
as can instrumental only...but its the right chemistry
for unification of belief that does it!

they announced how many times peter yarrow had
come to the u.s. capitol steps to sing ...and those
times were times when he was the voice of a person
who might not have been able to express a bewildered
feeling...and peter, paul and mary could articulate
it in sing-a long style...
sometimes asking a simple question in song...

'where have all the flowers gone?"

and the answer...
another question,

"when will they ever learn? "

i get teary eyed just remembering the feeling of accidentally
being there....and these songs are not what i listen to every day...
it was chemistry....time..place...people...issue...

history?

So that's interesting...I don't see John Mayer as being very political. I seem him commenting on political things, and bringing his human point of view to political topics, but not taking a strong, political side one way or another. I've seen him several times in concert and he doesn't speak of political topics and give his point of view-shoving his beliefs down others' throats like Dr. Paul mentions. That is one of the things I really like about John Mayer.

When I was in school I remember being in music class and we took the song Black Water by the Doobie Brothers and went section by section of the song--listening to each and every individual instrument, dissecting the song. It really was awesome and I had such a better appreciation for that song afterwards.

I really liked being able to take a song like Belief and dissecting it to connect with psychological, human concepts like beliefs and boundaries--awesome!

oh...

i did not mean to suggest that he was political...

i was just moved by his words and it made me reflect upon people who have moved me
in the way they express their feelings about humanity through music.
.....sometimes...unexpectedly...or sometimes when i had pre-judged them as 'corny'....
