Doctor Paul

Personal Statement

Long ago I had planned being surgeon. I grew up in rural Western Pennsylvania, completed my medical internship at the same hospital I was born in, and became engaged at 22 to a doctor’s daughter. I was poised to have the white picket fence, a wife, kids, and the American Dream. When I found myself cheated on and then broke up with my fiancé, my interest in love, dating and relationships intensified. I moved on to travel the world, ready, study and learn voraciously and reinvent my career to become a psychiatrist, author, and media commentator.

Somewhere between then and now, I became something like the Greg Kinnear of psychology – a fairly normal guy whom the media taps for stories and commentaries on everything from TV, radio, and print journalism stories on any and every subject to do with the mind and human behavior. In the same way that Kinnear once offered humorous commentaries on everything under the sun on Talk Soup, I have enjoyed becoming a go-to guy for thoughts on pop psychology and celebrity, relationships and the human mind. It’s helped me to become culturally aware and connect to audiences in my own live training events, where I teach men and women from around the world dating and relationship skills.

As a child of poverty and divorce in my youth - I am a workaholic in the media, and a perpetual, curious student of all things that make men and women tick. When I was a struggling medical resident, I noticed that the academic world makes the principles of psychology unwieldy, mysterious, and therefore impractical to the everyday masses. When I examined the books, radio styles and TV personas of current pop psychology commentators, I noticed that the pop psychology and self-help/spiritual types had mainly inspiration, humor, and drama to offer the public. However, they did not offer very much practical, effective, bona fide science.

I have always been a visual learner and found that visual media lent themselves well to the new system of psychology I would eventually patent. I took all the best inspiration from self-help and discovered how only some of it precisely fit into the hardcore academic training I had slaved away at for so many years.

The result was the model of the mind called MindOS: The Operating System of the Human Mind. MindOS simplifies complex psychological situations for laypeople. I speak about real science in common language that allows journalists and the public to join in the discussion and apply science to their own lives.

I’m an “everyman” kind of guy – a young Tom Hanks, Greg Kinnear, Dr Drew amalgam – with a taste for Jon Stewart’s humor and Barack Obama’s visionary, tolerant, inclusive message appealing to both genders and all generations. I’m confident but not arrogant and most comfortable as a team-player, not a prima donna. (I am reluctant to directly compare myself to any of those luminaries, especially the new president.)

I’m quite uniquely me – but perhaps the one thing that I have most passionately expressed to over 15,000 patients and clients, and many thousands more readers, listeners and viewers – over many tens of millions of media hits – is that in psychology and life, “There is a solution to EVERY problem.”

It’s not unlike “Yes, we can!” as a slogan, but I assure you I can back it up with my methods. Just see the testimonials on my websites, and review my works in books, print and online magazines, radio and television. I’ve addressed many serious topics, but probably just as many controversial and humorous topics. And both are a reflection of the genuine experiences that I, and all of us, have in our psychology and in life. With me, you don’t get anything fake or pretended. It’s all real.

I am:

  • A problem-solver who SYNTHESIZES unrelated ideas to give the public entertaining, practical solutions

  • The go-to guy for journalists looking for simple explanations for complex problems, explained to the public in compelling sound bites.

  • A man-about-town, a social animal, as comfortable talking to Gen X, Gen Y, and Gen Me on MTV as I am talking to a crowd of eighty-year-olds about their medications as a psychiatrist.

  • An innovator in my own professional field of medicine, world traveler, and storyteller to all who know me.

  • A geek, a nerd, and member of high school band who never went to a prom – who later became a model, rugby player, ladies man and media personality – explorer of the Malaysian jungle, the Himalayas, the Middle East, Russia, and all of Europe, having dated CEOs and French nobles, turned down porn stars for “the girl next door,” and (unwittingly to me) an attorney who moonlighted as a stripper.

  • An educator who teaches men and women worldwide not only how to be more sexy - feminine or masculine - but how to bring the ethics, boundaries, and mutual respect for the other gender to their dating and married lives.

  • A TRANSLATOR of psychology for the LAYPUBLIC – whether it be politics, violence, religion, celebrity, sex, relationships, depression, anxiety, stress or anything else that thrills us, pains us, or causes us a sense of wonder – I have a simple explanation as to why things are as they are

  • A funny, charming PERFORMER and CONSENSUS THINKER who disarms conflict with humor and understanding, and whose biggest mission in life is to bring people into harmony through the unifying power of science.

I want millions of people to experience the fascinating, invisible world of psychology as I do. Everything we do is simply avoiding pain and pursuing pleasure. I start with the belief that “there is a solution to every problem” – solving the pain and discovering the mysteries of sex, love, success, and deep meaning in life. This quest permeates all I’ve done and intend to do.

Below is a list of projects that I and my production partners have in development. All of these projects are designed to appeal to men and women both, educate, enlighten, entertain, and give practical answers to the most compelling questions of our time. It is my hope that all I’ve brought to bear in helping people for years will come to bear in creative, compelling, entertaining ways to enlighten the lives of millions of viewers, readers, and listeners.

L.S.I.: Love Scene Investigation – a cross between “Love Line” and “C.S.I.”, a television make-over show designed to highlight the dramas of our love-lives through a scientific investigation of the causes of our failures and step-by-step corrective measures for men and women - not only to thrill the viewer with a voyeuristic eye, but to give them practical tips and techniques for love and dating they’ve never seen before and will go out and apply to their own lives today.

B.R.O.P.R.A. – This is “Talk Soup” meets “The Man Show” – a weekly video podcast to be made into a television series – where a panel of men intelligently review and comment on women’s media on a weekly basis – the “man’s man” reply to The View, Oprah, Cosmo, and all the others – setting the record straight when the ladies get it wrong, and weighing in with the real, fly-on-the-wall perspective of the other half of humanity – MEN.

THEORY BOYS – a reality TV show in which two generations of men team up for mentoring on common male problems – dating, relationships, work, career, modern male identity – and find mid way through the series that they will be in competition as teams to try for their individual dream-goals as the prize.
